Abstract

To understand the environmental and spiritual awareness of prehistoric peoples, this research examines patterns of rock and cave carvings. Although they address the same subject, prehistory documents tangible evidence using the natural and physical sciences, while archaeology uses written texts to verify and revise historical accounts. The creative, aesthetic, and intellectual aspects of prehistoric human existence, as well as their daily routines, religious beliefs, and social projects, are clearly evident in rock and cave carvings. These carvings demonstrate the development of primitive man's creative and technological talents, embody the close connection between man and nature, and reveal recurring environmental and spiritual meanings. The carvings demonstrate the early stages of symbolic thinking and cultural communication by reflecting important natural sites such as pastures and water sources, and present a shared visual symbolic language among prehistoric societies. When collecting and analyzing the rock and cave carvings, the research relied on a descriptive-analytical methodology, highlighting regional similarities and differences through comparison. To understand the spiritual and environmental significance of the carvings, methods were used, including direct observation, digital photography, geographic information systems, and symbolic and comparative analysis. The study included secondary material from relevant publications and scientific studies, along with primary sources from field trips and carving analyses. Rock and cave carvings are not merely works of art; they are vital visual records representing societal customs, religious beliefs, and environmental awareness. The development of ancient human thought, culture, and symbolic awareness can be understood by comparing carvings from different sites, which exhibit similarities in symbols with local variations that reflect environmental and cultural diversity. To gain a deeper understanding of prehistoric human spiritual thinking and environmental awareness, the study proposes expanding the scope of theoretical research on these carvings from a symbolic and anthropological perspective. Comparative studies should be conducted to understand the similarities and differences between ancient cultures, viewing rock carvings as cultural and intellectual records
