Prosthetic technology has significantly improved the lives of individuals with limb loss by enhancing their independence and overall quality of life. Although substantial progress has been achieved in prosthetic materials and structural design, the incorporation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is expected to bring further advancements to this field. Prosthetic limbs represent one of the most effective solutions that enable amputees to lead a more independent and functional life without continuous reliance on external assistance. Over time, various manufacturing and fitting techniques have been developed to accommodate different medical conditions and user needs.
Artificial arms and legs are designed to compensate for lost limbs by restoring a level of natural movement and functionality. Historical evidence suggests that mechanical prosthetic devices have existed since ancient civilizations, evolving gradually into more advanced systems. This paper examines limb prosthetic devices by presenting a clear definition, followed by an overview of their historical development and technological evolution. Additionally, it explores future research opportunities and emerging trends in prosthetics, highlighting their importance in bioengineering and their broader impact on society. Particular attention is given to the role of AI in shaping next-generation prosthetics, including aspects related to personalization, adaptability, and ethical considerations.
