طرح الأكاديميون العديد من الأفكار في محاولة لفهم وتفسير اكتساب اللغة الأولى واللغة الثانية.
يمكن لهذه النظريات ان تساعد المعلمين على فهم عملية اكتساب اللغة بشكل أفضل ودعم طلابهم أثناء تعلمهم اللغة. في البداية، ستتناول هذه الدراسة أوجه التشابه بين اكتساب اللغة الأولى واكتساب اللغة الثانية، ثم ستوضح الاختلافات بينهما. أما أهمية هذه النتائج لمعلمي اللغات الأجنبية فستُغطى في القسم الأخير من البحث.
