Abstract

This paper discusses sustainable development strategies for preserving agricultural land amidst the rapid urban expansion of Libyan cities during the period 2010–2020, with a focused analytical study on the city of Tripoli. Agricultural lands in Tripoli are facing increasing pressures due to swift urban growth, leading to the loss of valuable agricultural areas and the degradation of natural resources such as soil and water. The study aims to analyze the impact of urban development on agricultural lands and to evaluate the strategies in place for their preservation. Data for the study were collected through a field survey targeting agricultural practitioners and urban planning specialists, alongside an analysis of urban expansion data using advanced geographical tools. The survey results revealed that the primary cause of agricultural land loss is unplanned urban sprawl, with additional issues such as water pollution and soil quality degradation. The study also showed weaknesses in existing legislation, insufficient coordination between government agencies, and a lack of community awareness regarding the importance of agricultural land. The paper outlines several strategies to achieve sustainable development, including promoting disciplined urban planning, employing smart agriculture techniques to conserve resources, supporting environmental legislation, and boosting community involvement in decision-making. The study recommends effective integration of agricultural and urban policies, development of mechanisms for monitoring urban changes and their impact on land, and the launch of continuous awareness campaigns to underscore the importance of agricultural land preservation. These strategies ensure a sustainable agricultural future that contributes to food security and environmental conservation in Tripoli and offers a replicable model for other Libyan cities.
