This study aims to analyze the impact of global oil price fluctuations on real economic growth in Libya during the period 1990–2024. It employs distributed time lag autoregression to measure short- and long-term relationships between variables. A set of explanatory variables was included, encompassing inflation, government spending, and trade openness, in addition to a dummy variable to capture the structural impact of the events of 2011. The results indicate a long-term equilibrium relationship between oil prices and real economic growth in Libya, reflecting the Libyan economy's reliance on the oil sector as a primary driver of economic activity. The study also reveals that inflation negatively impacts economic growth, while government spending did not demonstrate a significant positive long-term effect, suggesting its limited developmental effectiveness. Furthermore, the results show that trade openness did not significantly contribute to boosting economic growth due to the weakness of the domestic production base and the economy's dependence on imports. Finally, the results confirm a significant impact of the dummy variable related to 2011 on the trajectory of economic growth, reflecting the Libyan economy's sensitivity to political and economic transformations. The results of the error correction model showed a rapid adaptation towards long-term equilibrium after short-term imbalances, confirming the stability of the equilibrium relationship between the variables. Overall, the study concluded that the Libyan economy is highly dependent on fluctuations in global oil prices, and that achieving sustainable growth requires diversifying the production base and enhancing the effectiveness of macroeconomic policies.
