Abstract

This study investigates the design, technological processing, and spatial implementation of digitally printed murals as potent visual, communicative, and functional media to reinforce place identity within contemporary educational and academic architectural environments. The research problem addresses the pervasive visual monotony and sterile institutional surfaces in educational facilities, which lack cultural resonance, inhibit psychological engagement, and suffer from high mechanical wear and maintenance challenges. Employing a descriptive, analytical, and comparative methodology, the paper establishes the theoretical foundations of place identity within Environmental Graphic Design (EGD) and cognitive environmental psychology. It critically examines state-of-the-art large-format digital printing systems (UV-curable, water-based Latex, and Eco-solvent technologies) applied across advanced architectural wallcovering substrates (non-woven cellulose fibers, heavy-duty Type II commercial vinyl, and seamless woven textiles). The findings demonstrate that strategically designed printed murals transform institutional corridors and commons into interactive, cognitively stimulating learning environments, mitigating visual fatigue and anxiety while embodying institutional heritage through architectural typography and visual storytelling. Concurrently, technical performance criteria—specifically scrubbability, chemical stain resistance, and Class A flame-spread compliance (ASTM E84)—are fulfilled. The study concludes with a comprehensive specification matrix and design guideline tailored for educational interior architecture.
