The Role of Universities in Developing Political Awareness Among Students A Field Study at the Faculty of Arts (Swani), University of Tripoli

Abstract

This research aims to examine the role of universities in fostering political awareness among students. A descriptive approach was employed to analyze data and existing literature regarding the role of universities in community service and its relationship to student political awareness. The study concludes that universities can significantly contribute to enhancing the political awareness of university students through three main areas: first, the role of universities in shaping student political awareness; second, student attitudes toward discussing political issues within the university; and third, student opinions regarding participation in municipal, legislative, and presidential elections                                                                                                                                                         

The study’s findings were as follows                                                               

1- The results indicated that the general level of political awareness among university students ranged from moderate to high, with a notable interest in following current national issues. While some students demonstrated a clear interest in political awareness and political cultures, others showed an aversion to such political matters     

 2-It was also found that curricula and classroom instruction contribute positively to equipping students with an understanding of political concepts and citizenship rights; however, they sometimes fail to link theory to contemporary practical realities, as these theories originated in earlier eras                                                                                                         

3- This research also revealed that activities—such as cultural seminars, awareness-raising lectures, and discussion clubs—are the most effective tools for encouraging students to engage in political debate and develop critical thinking; however, some students are reluctant to participate in these activities
