The concept of man in Sidney Hook's philosophy

This research aims to uncover Hooke's conception of humanity through his humanistic vision, which places humankind at the center of social and moral existence and rejects subjecting it to any metaphysical authority or historical determinism. Hooke believes that humans, as rational, free, and responsible beings, possess the capacity to choose and shape their destiny based on reason, experience, and knowledge, not on supernatural forces or transcendent natural laws. Based on this, Hooke rejected traditional conceptions of natural law, arguing that human salvation is achieved through faith in one's own capabilities, the development of reason, and the establishment of the values of cooperation, tolerance, and democracy. The research concludes that freedom represents the cornerstone of Hooke's philosophy; it is not merely a political right, but a necessary condition for human flourishing and societal development. Hooke emphasized the interconnectedness of political, economic, cultural, and religious freedoms, considering each to be supportive of the others within a democratic society founded on respect for human dignity and free participation. Conversely, the suppression of freedoms threatens human existence itself and undermines the potential for reform and progress, which may justify resorting to revolution when all peaceful avenues for restoration are exhausted Freedom.
