The Libyan Vernacular in the Fabric of Classical Arabic: Manifestations and Pragmatic Functions in the Poetry of Ramadan Madi

Abstract

The expanding scope of themes occupying the contemporary poet, coupled with the complexity of their experiences and the multiplicity of their concerns and anxieties, has necessitated a linguistic inquisitiveness

*capable of responding to and expressing these dynamics. This has highlighted the urgent need for a living language that reflects the poet's new vision—a fresh, vital language imbued with the taste and essence of reality, moving away from rigid, normative language. Consequently, this required breaking the barrier between Classical Arabic (Fusha) and the colloquial dialect (Ammiyya), which has long been viewed merely as the everyday language of the street, incapable of rising to the level of artistic expression.

Ramadan Madi is regarded as one of the Libyan poets who utilized the Libyan dialect as a structural component that contributed to the formation of his poetic text. He crafted a linguistic fabric that fuses Classical and Colloquial Arabic to achieve specific ends, objectives, and functions. In this research, titled "The Libyan Dialect within the Classical Fabric: Manifestations and Pragmatic Functions in the Poetry of Ramadan Madi," we seek to examine the employment of the Libyan dialect in constructing the classical poem within the study's corpus. This is achieved by tracing its phonetic and morphological manifestations, ultimately arriving at its pragmatic functions.
