Attempted Suicide and Subsequent Suicide: A Comparative Analytical Study

Abstract

Suicide is a form of self-destruction whereby a person takes their own life, thus destroying themselves by depriving themselves of life. However, the aim of the act may not be self-destruction, but rather the fulfillment of a moral imperative. For example, a commander might blow up a fortress entrusted to his defense, or a captain might sink his ship. Thus, it becomes clear that suicide only occurs where the act of self-destruction is the objective goal. In other cases, there are forms of sacrifice worthy of appreciation.

There are also controversial cases, such as that of a resistance fighter who, fearing what is happening in the dungeons, kills themselves in a manner that is commendable from an objective moral perspective, that is, from the perspective of the social contract. However, it is a behavior rejected by morality in its true sense, as morality requires the resistance fighter to confront captivity while refraining from speaking out.
