DeLillo and the Simulacrum: A Critical Study of the Representations of Fear and Identity in White Noise

Abstract

This study examines representations of fear and identity in Don DeLillo’s novel White Noise through the application of the French philosopher Jean Baudrillard’s concept of the simulacrum as a critical framework for understanding the erosion of boundaries between reality and representation and the separation of the sign from its original referent. The study focuses on how the fear of death, as a direct existential experience, is transformed into a cultural, media, and semiotic discourse produced through a network of signs, technologies, and media. It explores manifestations of the simulacrum in the novel through Dylar, the toxic cloud, Jack Gladney’s academic identity, medical examinations, weapons, consumerism, and the media. It also demonstrates how the body becomes a technological object that can be measured and managed, while identity becomes an image or sign detached from its original referent. The study argues that the simulacrum does not merely imitate reality but produces an alternative or hyperreal reality that gradually replaces the original referent. It concludes that the novel employs the simulacrum as a narrative and critical mechanism for transforming fear into a circulating discourse, undermining referentiality, concealing existential vulnerability, and reshaping identity, the body, and consciousness within a consumer society dominated by images, media, and technology.
