Self-efficacy among hemodialysis patients in light of some demographic and pathological variables

The study aimed to identify the level of self-efficacy among hemodialysis patients and to examine differences in self-efficacy levels according to gender, marital status, age, and duration of hemodialysis treatment. The study adopted a descriptive-analytical design. The sample consisted of 50 hemodialysis patients receiving treatment at Al-Zawiya Kidney Hospital during the study period. To achieve the objectives of the study, a self-efficacy scale was developed comprising three dimensions: self-initiative in dealing with treatment requirements, effort exertion in adhering to treatment, and perseverance in facing the challenges of hemodialysis. The psychometric properties of the scale were verified. The results showed that the overall level of self-efficacy among the participants was above average. The dimensions of perseverance in facing the challenges of hemodialysis and effort exertion in adhering to treatment were above the hypothetical mean, whereas self-initiative in dealing with treatment requirements was at a moderate level. The results also indicated that there were no statistically significant differences in overall self-efficacy or its dimensions attributable to gender, marital status, age, or duration of hemodialysis treatment.
