This study aims to analyze the financial structure of the Central Bank of Libya’s balance sheet during the period 2010–2020, identify changes in its assets and liabilities, and examine their implications for monetary policy indicators. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach based on data published in the Central Bank of Libya’s annual reports, economic bulletins, and monetary and banking statistics. It also employs indicators of annual growth rates and the relative importance of balance sheet components.
The findings reveal significant structural changes, particularly an increase in loans and advances to the General Treasury, reaching LYD 84,107 million in 2020. Currency issued also increased to LYD 40,862.3 million, compared with LYD 8,457.4 million in 2010, while total banking operations assets reached LYD 158,460.2 million at the end of 2020. The study concludes that analyzing the components of the Central Bank’s balance sheet is essential for understanding monetary developments. It also emphasizes the importance of distinguishing between currency issued, the monetary base, and money supply when assessing the effects of monetary policy.
