Abstract

Reinforcement corrosion is one of the most critical issues affecting the durability and service life of reinforced concrete structures. Corrosion occurs due to the loss of the protective passive layer on the reinforcement—triggered by chlorides, carbonation, or various environmental factors—leading to rust formation, expansion of the corroded steel, cracking and spalling of the concrete cover, and a reduction in the structure's load-bearing capacity. This study aims to elucidate the causes and mechanisms of reinforcement corrosion and its impact on concrete structures, as well as to examine inspection and assessment methods and review the latest repair and protection techniques employed in civil engineering.

The study also demonstrated that early diagnosis—utilizing non-destructive testing and laboratory analyses—contributes to reducing repair costs and extending the service life of structures. Furthermore, preventive measures such as the use of low-permeability concrete, cathodic protection, and corrosion-resistant reinforcement remain among the most effective solutions for ensuring the sustainability of concrete structures and minimizing the economic and structural damage caused by corrosion.
