The Potential of Seaports as Tourist Destinations (A Case Study of the Port of Sousse, Libya)

Abstract

This study aims to examine the potential for utilising seaports as tourist destinations that contribute to the diversification of the tourism product and the promotion of local economic development, through an applied study of the port of Sousse in Libya.

To achieve this, the study adopted a descriptive-analytical approach, utilising field research tools to collect data from the study population, The significance of the study lies in its presentation of a scientific framework for utilising the resources available at the port to foster the emergence of a tourism sector that serves as a new attraction, particularly in light of Libya’s drive to rebuild service facilities and develop its tourism infrastructure

The study concluded that tourism services associated with the port remain limited, being confined to receiving local visitors and providing basic services for fishing boats and boat trips, whilst there is a shortage of tourist moorings, tourist service centres, tourist reception facilities, restaurants, cafés and specialised leisure services.
