The Impact of Digital Transformation on Social Interaction Patterns Among Youth in Libyan Society

Abstract

   The present study aims to examine the impact of digital transformation on the social interaction patterns of Libyan youth, focusing on how reliance on digital platforms affects face-to-face and digital interactions, social identity, and community engagement. The study adopted a descriptive-analytical approach, suitable for capturing social phenomena and analyzing the relationship between the independent variable, digital transformation, and the dependent variable, social interaction, without researcher intervention The study population consisted of Libyan youth aged 18–30, both male and female, who regularly use digital media. A sample of 300 participants was selected using simple random sampling, ensuring diversity in gender, educational level, social status, and geographical location.

    Data were collected using a structured questionnaire, divided into demographic information and eight main domains: digital platforms, technology use, digital skills, cognitive and social impacts of digital transformation, digital and face-to-face social interaction, communication skills, and depth of social relationships, measured on a five-point Likert scale The results revealed high levels of digital platform use and digital skills among Libyan youth, with a strong positive correlation between digital transformation and digital social interaction, and a weak negative correlation with face-to-face interaction, indicating a shift toward digital interaction without eliminating direct social contact. Findings also showed a reduction in the gender digital gap and a clear youth awareness of social changes resulting from digital transformation.

Based on these results, the study recommends enhancing digital and social awareness, balancing digital and face-to-face interaction, developing responsible digital skills, supporting families and educational institutions in guiding digital use, and conducting future research across different age groups and social contexts.
